The Dalai Lama is the spiritual and political leader of the Tibetan people. The name is a combination of the Mongolian word dalai meaning “Ocean” and the Tibetan word bla-ma (with a silent “b”) meaning “guru, teacher”. The present (14th) Dalai Lama’s religious name is Tenzin Gyatso. He is often addressed as Kundun, which means “presence”. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, and is also well known for his lifelong advocacy for Tibetans inside and outside Tibet. From the book “We are all equal”, by Finn Nygaard.
