Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz, the Cuban politician born in 1926, is considered to be the most important Latin-American leader of the 20th century. Castro headed the government of Cuba from 1959, and was until 2008 Commander in Chief of the country’s armed forces. He also served as First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba until 2011.
