Museum Ovartaci in La Biennale di Venezia · The Milk of Dreams
Poster to commemorate Ovartaci (Louis Marcussen, 1894-1985).
Hospitalized following a mental health crisis in 1929, Louis Marcussen (1894—1985) begins a spectacular journey. Ovartaci’s family admitted her to the psychiatric hospital in Risskov (Aarhus, Denmark), where she lived and worked for the next fifty-six years.
She filled her room at the hospital with artworks, with tall and eloquent cut-out female figures, and she seems to invest himself deeply in herr work and visions. She dissolves into a swirl of male, female, animal and divine identities. She discards the name ‘Louis’ and takes the name ‘Ovartaci’.
